I love the dramatic “Chiaroscuro” light and color effects created by strong contrasts of bright light and deep shadows. Remove the color and we have the stark, gritty, black & white images of the “Film Noir” gendre of the early 40s and 50s cinema. Film Noir uses a mixture of stark lighting, lone figures, deep shadows and empty, rainy streets to create a brooding, gritty and mysterious atmosphere that draws the viewer in.
This is one of my favorite painting styles.
